Dopo la seconda guerra mondiale, gli Alleati giurarono di dare la caccia ai criminali di guerra nazisti «fino ai confini del mondo». Nella realtà, molti di loro non solo sfuggirono alla caccia, ma riuscirono semmai a rifugiarsi negli ingranaggi della guerra fredda, protetti dall’Occidente in cambio del loro aiuto nella lotta contro il comunismo.
Reinhard Gehlen, fondatore dell’intelligence della Germania Ovest, accolse gli agenti delle SS nell’ovile, sopravvalutando le loro presunte capacità. La decisione, poco lungimirante, rischiò di compromettere la sicurezza nazionale, poiché il KGB scoprì presto che gli agenti nazisti erano facili da smascherare e da corrompere. Ma Gehlen non era stato certo l’unico a perseguire questa cinica strategia; i servizi segreti americani, sovietici, francesi e israeliani, nonché le organizzazioni nazionaliste e i movimenti indipendentisti si servirono tutti di ex agenti del Terzo Reich, considerati di insuperabile affidabilità.
Infiltrati nei servizi di intelligence di tutto il mondo, i fuggitivi nazisti divennero pertanto trafficanti d’armi, spie, assassini e mercenari indipendenti, svolgendo ruoli cruciali nella guerra sotterranea tra le superpotenze. Dai ristoranti tedeschi di lusso ai porti jugoslavi infestati dai contrabbandieri, dai rifugi fascisti nella Spagna di Franco alle case sicure di Damasco e ai country club egiziani, queste spie crearono una fitta rete di influenza e di informazioni, diventando un ingrediente unico e infiammabile nelle lotte clandestine del dopoguerra.
Grazie a rivelazioni appena desecretate provenienti dal Mossad e da numerosi archivi riservati, lo storico Danny Orbach rivela in Fuggitivi una storia a lungo dimenticata, descrivendo lo stupefacente cast di personaggi che ha fatto da sfondo alla guerra fredda. Avvolta nella segretezza ufficiale, offuscata dal mito e dalla propaganda, la straordinaria storia di questi agenti nazisti non era mai stata raccontata in modo così efficace.

Beyond boring. A very interesting topic but presented in a way difficult to read (editing?)Author loves commas and looooong sentences. For some reason he uses the phrase "rubbish heap" as a description about 10 times in the first 50 pages, then never uses it again. Kind of odd.

A fascinating topic and hats off to the author for remarkable research. However, the delivery is clunky and poorly executed. Very muddling at times. This was a decent book about Nazis after WWII. If you are unaware of the history of Gehlen in West German spy operations, and Operation Damocles involving Nazis working for the Egyptian missile program, the book is interesting. If you already have a passing knowledge about this there is little new.
