Henry Worsley era un marito devoto, un padre affettuoso e un ufficiale decorato dei reparti speciali dell’Esercito inglese, che credeva nell’onore e nello spirito di sacrificio. Ma era anche un uomo con un’ossessione: Worsley era ossessionato dal mito di Ernest Shackleton, l’esploratore polare che per primo cercò di raggiungere il Polo Sud e di attraversare l’Antartide a piedi. Shackleton non realizzò mai il suo sogno, ma riuscì a salvare i suoi uomini da morte certa assurgendo a statura di leader leggendario. Worsley era irresistibilmente attratto da queste imprese, acquistò cimeli e resoconti dei viaggi di Shackleton spendendo una fortuna, modellò il suo stile di comando su quello di Shackleton e decise che sarebbe riuscito là dove Shackleton aveva fallito: nella terra più inospitale al mondo. Nel 2008 compì un viaggio in Antartide con due discendenti dell’equipaggio dell’Endurance, e nel 2015, all’età di cinquantacinque anni, salutò la famiglia e gli amici e partì da solo con l’obiettivo di attraversare l’Antartide a piedi.
