La sua vita quotidiana è ridotta all'essenziale, il suo corpo, goffo e magrissimo, è minato da un male incurabile: proprio questo sacerdote "vincente" su di sé e sugli altri è per Bernanos il simbolo di una religiosità autentica. Una forza e una dignità incrollabili sostengono infatti il giovane prete che, pur sperimentando dentro di sé l'angoscia del dubbio, è capace di riaccostarsi alla pienezza della fede, accettando e facendo accettare agli altri, in uno slancio d'amore, il suo destino.

I struggled to get into this and then truly loved it. I can see why it is considered a Christian classic. The humility of this lovely, awkward, and young priest, his love of his people make this book real and lovely.
