"Menzogne S.p.a." è un romanzo in cui la ricerca della verità è un'azione bizzarra, tragicomica, eppure eroica, proprio come il viaggio che Rachmael, il protagonista, vuole intraprendere. Siamo in un futuro in cui per risolvere il problema della sovrappopolazione della Terra è stata fondata una Neocolonia nel sistema di Fomalhaut, chiamata Bocca di Balena. Laggiù sembra che tutti siano felici: ma anche se qualcuno fosse scontento, non potrebbe mai tornare indietro, perché il Telpor, il teletrasporto con cui i terrestri arrivano sulla colonia lontana ventiquattro anni luce, non funziona come viaggio di ritorno. Per questo Rachmael si ostina a volerla raggiungere con la sua nave, a costo di viaggiare per diciotto lunghi anni. Odissea nello spazio, viaggio attraverso lo specchio, sfida alla realtà e ai suoi simulacri, all'identità e al potere che vuole plasmarla, questo libro mostra il percorso che conduce a una sia pur provvisoria verità come tortuoso e difficile. E nella narrativa dickiana non esiste un intervento divino che salvi Rachmael dalla falsa utopia di Bocca di Balena, come un novello Giona. Ma almeno, come osserva Carlo Pagetti nella sua introduzione, il fatto che il protagonista si ponga la domanda su quale sia la via della conoscenza - What way?- implica che una risposta, seppure parziale o insoddisfacente, possa ancora esistere!
