"Don Casmurro" di Machado de Assis apparve per la prima volta a Rio de Janeiro nel 1899. All'epoca lo scrittore era al termine della vita e aveva sia scritto opere importanti, come le "Memorie dell'aldilà" o il "Quincas Borba", ma con questo romanzo trovò qualcosa che ancora non era stato compiuto: quel punto di equilibrio vorticoso fra racconto e riflessione: il sentimento di una letteratura pensata come potente sguardo sul dolore. Con uno stile confidenziale, venato d'ironia e di una sottile malinconia, il protagonista, Bento Santiago, racconta al lettore la propria avventura umana segnata, sin dall'adolescenza, dall'amore per Capitu e dalla gelosia, il presunto tradimento di lei con il suo miglior amico, il progressivo rinchiudersi in un'esistenza cupa e isolata dal mondo, popolata di ricordi e di fantasmi. Una vicenda drammatica che però non si abbandona mai del tutto al pessimismo: con un tono arguto e un linguaggio permeato di aforismi il lettore segue le elucubrazioni di Bentinho, un flusso di pensieri che riflette la voce unica del suo autore, la cui prospettiva scettica e disincantata è nutrita da un umorismo cinico e quasi anglosasone che prevale sullo sguardo sconfitto di Bento. Grazie alla sua scrittura innovativa, "Don Casmurro" rimane ancora oggi un testo modernissimo e fondante della produzione letteraria brasiliana.
