Nel 1456 la sorella di Johannes Gutenberg usa la favola di Hansel e Gretel come surrogato per condividere un segreto di famiglia a cui solo il fratello crede. Nel 1835 i fratelli Jacob e Wilhelm Grimm rivedono il racconto per seppellire una verità su Jacob che nemmeno lui è pronto ad affrontare. Nel 1910 un'illustratrice esplora l'enigma della favola dall'interno di un istituto psichiatrico. Nel 1986 una studiosa di folklore e suo fratello scoprono che la figura della strega nei boschi non è un esempio di fedeltà narrativa, mentre nel 2211 due sonde spaziali alla ricerca di un pianeta simile alla Terra trasmettono la storia in codice binario. Danzando nel tempo tra il 1378 e il 2365 i protagonisti del romanzo incontrano e reinventano la favola di Hansel e Gretel confrontando esperienze tragiche e personali, in cerca di un senso universale alla Storia in cui sono immersi. This is a conceptually striking, beautifully-written book. Drager is a talent, make no mistake, and I'm excited to follow her career. Loved the looping narratives of time, space, storytelling, & siblings. Both micro & macro in scale, this is a subtle, tightly-controlled tale of what it means to be human. A concise beauty of a book.
