Le tre tragedie "tebane" presentate in questo volume non costituiscono una trilogia vera e propria, ma risalgono a momenti diversi della vita di Sofocle: "Antigone", l'episodio conclusivo, è stata scritta per prima, nel 442; "Edipo Re" è di poco anteriore al 425; mentre "Edipo a Colono" è l'ultima opera, rappresentata postuma nel 401. I casi del re di Tebe - inconsapevole assassino del proprio padre e sposo della propria madre, quindi fratello della propria figlia - e della sua discendenza ammoniscono che nell'agire umano è sempre presente un limite; ma insegnano anche che l'uomo resta in ogni caso protagonista della propria vita. Ed è proprio la dualità della natura umana, tesa da un lato all'estatica visione della divinità e coinvolta dall'altro nelle dolorose piaghe dell'esistenza, a costituire il nucleo di questi tre capolavori del teatro classico.
