Fin dall'antichità l'"Edipo re" di Sofocle è stata considerata la tragedia per eccellenza. C'è in essa l'ansia della conoscenza e, al contempo, la coscienza di quanto difficile sia conoscere. Anche Edipo, che pure ha risolto l'enigma della Sfinge, deve spingersi oltre i limiti per poter dare un senso compiuto ai mille indizi che alludono al sapere, ma che ancora non sono conoscenza. Ed è proprio per aver sfidato questi limiti che egli incontra una sofferenza infinita, tanto che Nietzsche ha potuto scrivere di lui: "Edipo è l'uomo che più ha sofferto, per questo egli ha svelato l'enigma dell'uomo". All'"Edipo re" si sono rifatti via via Seneca, Stazio, Corneille, Voltaire, Hegel, Hòlderlin e, nel nostro secolo, Hofmannsthal, Gide, Cocteau, Pasolini. Ma la lettura più inquietante rimane quella di Freud, che ha fatto, ancora una volta, di Edipo il paradigma del destino umano. Introduzione di Franco Rella.
