Londra, 1909. Il profumo degli alberi in fiore decreta l’inizio della stagione sociale: giovani uomini e donne inondano le sale da ballo. Ursula, invece, passa le giornate chiusa in un piccolo laboratorio che ha costruito all’ultimo piano di casa. Non che trovare marito non le interessi, ma preferisce l’azoto liquido: il suo sogno è di essere ammessa alla Chemical Society. Ha una mente eccezionale e la sua ricerca è promettente, eppure le sembra di dover fare fatica doppia rispetto ai colleghi uomini. Ursula, però, è determinata, una vera «testa dura». Sa di poter contare sul sostegno del suo professore, della famiglia e dell’uomo di cui è innamorata. In un modo o nell’altro, riuscirà a raggiungere il posto che merita. Un giorno, però, un imprevisto la costringe a volgere lo sguardo fuori dalla sua ricerca. Capisce così che il mondo è pervaso dall’ingiustizia. Sono gli anni in cui la voce delle suffragette si fa più forte: le donne chiedono a gran voce il diritto di voto. A costo di perdere il lavoro e la libertà, Ursula si unisce alla loro lotta e non smette di combattere, mettendo la ricerca scientifica al servizio dei propri ideali. Inventerà qualcosa che salverà migliaia di vite, di donne e di uomini. Perché Ursula ha capito una cosa importante: lottare per i diritti delle donne significa lottare per i diritti dell’umanità intera.
Per la prima volta in Italia il romanzo, diventato ormai un libro di culto, che ha segnato un prima e un dopo nella storia della letteratura femminista. Zangwill ci porta nel mondo di quelle donne che, con la loro lotta, hanno conquistato alcuni dei diritti fondamentali alla base della civiltà di oggi. Rimane tanta strada da fare ma, se oggi siamo tutte un po’ più libere di essere noi stesse, è anche grazie alle «teste dure» che hanno spianato la strada.
