1125, Inghilterra. Matilde, moglie dell’imperatore del Sacro Romano Impero, torna a Londra dopo la morte del marito. In assenza di eredi maschi, suo padre, re Enrico I, le promette la successione al trono, ma le nozze di Matilde con Goffredo V, figlio del Conte d’Angiò, il nemico storico dei normanni, provocano sconcerto e disapprovazione a corte.
