Sposata da cinque anni con il conte von Arnim, ben più anziano di lei e prussiano fino al midollo, Elizabeth abbandona la caotica Berlino per Nassenheide, enorme tenuta in Pomerania. Si innamora della pace, dell’isolamento del luogo: il tetro convento seicentesco viene ripristinato, come pure il vasto e derelitto giardino che lo circonda.
Il libro, pubblicato anonimo nel 1898 (e con grande successo, tanto che le opere successive verranno firmate con la dicitura «l’autrice del Giardino di Elizabeth»), nasce in questa oasi, ed è profondamente legato alla vicenda biografica della giovane inglese trapiantata in Germania.
Nel giardino (lo ammirerà estasiato E.M. Forster, insegnante privato a Nassenheide nel 1904) Elizabeth legge, sogna, prepara la sua carriera di scrittrice. Nella cura delle piante e dei fiori, nella maternità, nel trascorrere delle stagioni, nella fuga dalla distruttività dei rapporti sociali, Elizabeth sente autentica la determinazione a essere qualcosa di più di una buona moglie tedesca.
La natura, come l’uomo, dev’essere libera. E, sotto le mentite e raffinate spoglie di un inno alla intensa bellezza della vegetazione, una donna più avanti del suo tempo ci parla di un modo estremamente moderno di vivere il conflitto tra libertà e oppressione.

After enjoying Enchanted April so much I was suprised I didn't enjoy this one. I found Elizabeth unkind and shallow. Taking a baby owl from a nest was horrible. I know you have to view this through eyes of the time but I found her views of people from a class she saw as below her awful.
