Apparso nel 1934, questo libro riassume nel modo più completo i principi letterari maturati da Pound in quasi trent'anni di attività letteraria. Si presenta come un testo abbastanza impersonale da poter essere usato come manuale; in questo senso vanno interpretati il proposito di rifuggire dalla polemica diretta e la dovizia di documenti poetici scelti e commentati.
