Scritto a metà del Settecento, Fanny Hill è uno dei più importanti classici della letteratura erotica mondiale, anche se per lungo tempo è stato un vero e proprio libro clandestino, stampato e trattato di nascosto, diffuso solo a costo di rischi personali. Un vero e proprio libro underground. Processato e proibito a metà del Settecento per la descrizione di una scena di sodomia a cui assiste la protagonista Fanny Hill, dopo aver conosciuto la censura ancora per tutto l'Ottocento, il libro viene pubblicato in modo integrale in Inghilterra solamente nel 1963, appena dopo la chiusura della vicenda che vietava la pubblicazione dell'«Amante di Lady Chatterley». Ma l'editore, a riprova dell'aura maledetta del libro, perde il processo l'anno seguente. Quindi il libro viene di nuovo fatto ritirare dal mercato, fino al successivo tentativo degli anni settanta. Anche negli Stati Uniti il volume andò incontro a vicende analoghe, fino al processo del 1966 in cui venne finalmente dichiarato "non osceno". Il romanzo, come molta letteratura del Settecento, è scritto in forma epistolare e narra le vicende di una giovane ragazza che vive nei pressi di Liverpool. Dopo la morte dei genitori, viene presa a servizio da una signora che lei crede ricca, ma che in realtà è la tenutaria di un bordello, in cui la ragazza viene progressivamente impiegata. Da lì le sue descrizioni delle immaginifiche situazioni a cui si trova ad assistere o partecipare. Da questo libro sono stati tratti numerosi film, tra cui la versione di Russ Meyer del 1964.
