Beirut, 14 settembre 1982: il comandante capo delle Forze Libanesi Gemayel Bashir perde la vita in un attentato a opera di gruppi terroristi palestinesi. Due giorni dopo, i campi profughi di Sabra e Chatila vengono presi d'assalto dai più fanatici seguaci di Bashir, i falangisti cristiani, che vendicano la morte del proprio idolo trucidando centinaia di inermi palestinesi, tra cui donne, vecchi, bambini. Ari Folman è un giovanissimo soldato dell'esercito israeliano, e il suo posto è tra i cerchi concentrici di militari che circondano il luogo della carneficina. Forse i razzi che hanno illuminato a giorno la ferocia dei falangisti sono partiti anche dalla sua postazione, ma lui non sa dirlo: vent'anni dopo nella sua testa non è rimasto un solo ricordo, né della notte del massacro, né dei combattimenti che l'hanno preceduta. Sarà l'incubo ricorrente di un amico a spingerlo verso i racconti e le testimonianze dei protagonisti dell'epoca, nel doloroso tentativo di riportare in vita la memoria di quei giorni terribili. "Valzer con Bashir" è il resoconto profondo e sofferto - ma non per questo meno lucido - di uno dei momenti più atroci della nostra storia, il risultato di un approccio delicato, originale, alle assurdità della guerra.
