Benvenuti nel futuro prossimo. Benvenuti negli Stati (non troppo) Uniti, cinesizzati e militarizzati, sull’orlo del collasso economico e culturale. Il trentanovenne Lenny Abramov, figlio di immigrati ebrei russi, è decisamente un uomo di un altro secolo: mentre l’analfabetismo dilaga e si comunica ormai attraverso schermi digitali detti äpparäti, lui ancora si ostina a leggere quegli oggetti curiosi e maleodoranti di carta stampata che tiene nel suo Muro dei Libri. Intanto cerca di fare carriera nei Servizi Post-Umani vendendo a una clientela selezionata «proroghe vita a tempo indeterminato» e a dispetto del colesterolo alto (ereditato dai genitori, insieme alla bruttezza) sogna di non morire mai, perché «la vita eterna è l’unica vita che conta». E crede nell’amore. Almeno da quando, alla fine di un anno sabbatico trascorso a Roma, ha conosciuto la giovanissima ed enigmatica Eunice Park, figlia di un podologo coreano,che dopo una notte di bagordi e passione gli insegna a lavarsi i denti correttamente e lo chiama con affetto «faccia da sfigato». Rientrato a New York, mentre il lavoro e il conto in banca gli danno più di una preoccupazione, Lenny si aggrappa al pensiero di Eunice: quella ragazza minuta,determinata, chattante e provocante deve diventare sua, sua per sempre, e Lenny non resiste alla tentazione di tenere diligentemente un diario, forse l’ultimo sulla faccia della Terra, per raccontare la loro storia, che sfiderà il declino dell’impero mercificato, come se l’amore ancora potesse salvare il mondo. Storia d’amore è un romanzo spiazzante e avvolgente, amaro ed esilarante, molto meno distopico di quanto ci piacerebbe pensare, dove l’ironia smonta il mondo pezzo per pezzo e poi si siede attonita, incapace di rimontarlo.
