Qui la vittima è una giovane donna, aggredita e ferita nella sua stanza, la 'camera gialla', appunto, all'interno di un tetro castello nei pressi di Parigi dove il professore, padre della giovane, si è ritirato per studiare certi fenomeni di dissociazione della materia che potrebbero mettere in discussione la scienza ufficiale... Un classico del 1907 di cui, a partire dal cinema muto fino a oggi, esistono numerose versioni cinematografiche, un fortunato esordio dell'autore che diventerà famoso in tutto il mondo con Il Fantasma dell'Opera. Così lo descrive un entusiasta Alessandro Robecchi nella prefazione: «È il molo da cui un grande autore salpa per scrivere tutto ciò che scriverà, e al tempo stesso un punto fermo, uno snodo imprescindibile, piazzato al confine tra romanzo popolare, enigma, sciarada, sfida al lettore, divertimento e mistero».
