Edito per la prima volta nel 1961, dopo il clamoroso "Tamburo di latta", "Gatto e topo" è un racconto che, per dirla con l'autore, attinge alle zone turpi e oscene della vita e viene giocato sulle corde del grottesco e della provocazione. Joachim Mahlke, liceale di Danzica durante la seconda guerra mondiale, ha un difetto, un'anomalia che lo distingue dai suoi coetanei, un vistoso pomo d'adamo sviluppato oltre ogni misura e che si muove quasi zampettando alla maniera di un topo quando il suo proprietario mangia o beve o anche soltanto quando medita profondamente o devotissimamente prega la Madonna. Nel tentativo di dissimulare tale deformità, per difendersi dal gatto, il gran gatto sempre in agguato (trasparente metafora della società), Mahlke dà luogo ad ameni e atroci accadimenti, che si consumano in mezzo alla ragazzaglia, sull'indolente, sporca, eccitante spiaggia di Danzica. Il segreto di Günter Grass, ha scritto H.M. Enzensberger, "è in quell'equilibrio, precario e originalissimo, che egli riesce a stabilire tra la sua anarchica forza d'immaginazione e il suo sovrano magistero artistico".
