Ambientato durante la guerra civile spagnola, cui George Orwell partecipò in prima persona, Omaggio alla Catalogna è il racconto della dimensione più cruda e feroce della guerra, fatta di «proiettili rombanti e schegge d’acciaio», ma soprattutto di «fango, pidocchi, fame e freddo». L’esperienza del fronte, vissuta tra le file dell’esercito repubblicano contro il regime totalitario di Francisco Franco, si rivelò determinante per Orwell, che proprio in quest’occasione mostra di maturare per la prima volta il suo rifiuto e la sua condanna nei confronti dei governi autoritari. Pubblicato nel 1938, Omaggio alla Catalogna è una cronaca di straordinaria importanza e una testimonianza diretta del fermento che unì gli entusiasmi della sinistra europea prima dell’avvento dell’egemonia stalinista.
