Qualche mese dopo l’inizio della Guerra civile spagnola, lo scrittore e giornalista britannico Eric Arthur Blair, noto con lo pseudonimo di George Orwell, si reca a Barcellona con l’intenzione di scrivere degli articoli sulla drammatica situazione del Paese. Quasi subito, però, si unisce ai repubblicani, entrando a far parte delle milizie del poum. Dopo l’addestramento alla caserma Lenin, arriva la guerra di trincea, arrivano i combattimenti al fronte, finché durante un assedio viene ferito in modo grave; a quel punto torna a Barcellona e da lì si sposta poi in Francia. Dall’esperienza della guerra vissuta in prima persona nasce questo libro che è un diario, una cronaca quotidiana dei giorni trascorsi in Spagna, ma anche una eccezionale testimonianza della guerra contro Franco e del conflitto interno alla sinistra. Un racconto in presa diretta improntato alla semplicità e all’immediatezza, che si caratterizza come unico per la sua impareggiabile qualità narrativa, tanto da poterlo definire il punto generativo dei suoi due libri più celebri, La fattoria degli animali e 1984, dedicati al totalitarismo moderno.
