«I discorsi di Hitler hanno punteggiato la mia infanzia», confida nella sua autobiografia George Steiner, e sono stati, «tanti anni dopo, la fonte del Processo». Figlio di genitori ebrei, con i quali nel 1940 si trasferì giovanissimo negli Stati Uniti per sottrarsi alla furia del regime nazista, Steiner ha sempre rivolto un’ampia parte delle proprie riflessioni all’Olocausto e alle sue implicazioni per il linguaggio. È da questo interesse che nacque quello che, insieme al Correttore, è il suo unico romanzo, uscito per la prima volta nel 1979 su «The Kenyon Review». Il protagonista è proprio Adolf Hitler, che Steiner immagina sopravvissuto alla distruzione del bunker di Berlino nel 1945 e poi fuggito oltreoceano, nel cuore della foresta amazzonica, dove viene ritrovato e catturato da un gruppo di soldati israeliani cacciatori di nazisti. Davanti ai suoi giudici, il Führer pronuncia in difesa un’arringa che non risparmia domande filosoficamente provocatorie, scandalose al punto da suscitare, al momento della pubblicazione e per diversi anni a seguire, il disappunto quando non addirittura lo sdegno dei lettori e della stampa: il «New York Times» non esitò a definirlo «francamente osceno». Oggi, a distanza di oltre mezzo secolo, questo libro ci appare per quello che voleva essere nelle intenzioni del suo autore: una sfida a immergerci nelle mistificazioni del linguaggio e confrontarci con il volto del male.
