«L’interesse che si attribuisce di solito ai miei libri è di ordine letterario … non li si può infatti classificare in un genere definito in anticipo». La consapevole inclassificabilità delle opere di Georges Bataille tocca il vertice con La parte maledetta (1949): un saggio di economia politica che con «ardito rovesciamento» scalza in radice le cognizioni basilari su cui poggia quella che viene ritenuta la scienza triste, per disvelarla come scienza tragica. Al «miserabile» principio acquisitivo dell’utile, che secondo gli economisti governerebbe la produzione, la conservazione e il consumo, Bataille antepone la dissipazione improduttiva, il bisogno di distruggere, il gesto dilapidatorio delle ricchezze di cui testimonia il potlàc, lo scambio arcaico studiato dagli etnologi e non riducibile a convenzionale antenato del commercio. È nella depénse – oggetto di un breve scritto (1933) che Bataille continuò a ritoccare, denunciandone il valore strategico per il suo pensiero – che si compie la catastrofe della ragione utilitaria. Un argomentare che «sconvolge e toglie allo spirito il riposo» ripercorre la storia della civiltà umana attraverso le nozioni di eccesso, sacrificio, dispendio e orgia. Perché «non è la necessità ma il suo contrario, il “lusso”, che pone alla materia vivente e all’uomo i loro problemi fondamentali».
