Dopo la morte improvvisa del primogenito Granville e di suo figlio Oliver, annegati al largo della Cornovaglia, Lord Darracott si vede costretto a destinare il suo titolo e i suoi beni al nipote Hugo. Che però lui non conosce, giacché è figlio del suo secondogenito, ripudiato per aver osato sposare una tessitrice.
