Questo è il libro che ha inventato la nazione germanica, sia nella percezione dei Romani, sia in quella degli stessi Germani, che prima non si consideravano un popolo solo destinato ad unificarsi, ma un insieme vasto ed eterogeneo di tribù sparse nel nord est dell'Europa, spesso in guerra tra loro, alcune in pace con Roma, altre ostili. La Germania è un trattato etnografico scritto attorno al 98 d.C., con usi, costumi, cibi, vestiari, culti, stanziamenti, spostamenti di queste variegate e selvagge popolazioni, guardate anche da Tacito con ammirazione per le loro primitive virtù, ormai dai Romani perdute; saranno poi i Germani che, dopo aver imparato dai Romani l'arte della guerra e un po' di civiltà, avrebbero determinato il crollo dell'impero, o forse semplicemente lo spostamento del suo centro più a nord. Anche le vicende del terribile XX secolo e dell'Europa d'oggi discendono probabilmente da ciò che inizia in questo libro. Dino Baldi, che ha tradotto il testo, lo ha corredato di un commento che segue passo passo il testo; nonché delle altre descrizioni dei popoli nordici che ci vengono dall'antichità greco-latina precedente: Ippocrate, Polibio, Cesare, Diodoro Siculo, Vitruvio, Strabone, Plinio il Vecchio e altri.
