Frédéric Moreau, il protagonista dell’Educazione sentimentale (1869), è un giovane dalle vaghe ambizioni artistiche e sociali che trascina indolente la sua esistenza fra delusioni e fallimenti. È una lenta usura, la sua, che non risparmia nemmeno l’amore tenero e profondo per Madame Arnoux, la donna per la quale proverà per tutta la vita una passione destinata a rimanere inappagata. Considerato il capolavoro di Flaubert, il romanzo è molto più che il racconto di una iniziazione. Col suo susseguirsi di occasioni mancate, slanci mortificati, progetti abortiti, narrati con uno stile apparentemente oggettivo, L’educazione sentimentale è l’affresco di un’epoca segnata dal trionfo di una borghesia gretta e prosaica che ha smesso di coltivare illusioni e ideali e ha fatto del denaro e della falsità il cardine dei rapporti umani. Ed è anche lo specchio di una generazione che, incapace di riconoscersi appieno nei valori dominanti, non sa trovare antidoti al sentimento disperante della propria impotenza e mediocrità.
