Nanako è in piena crisi esistenziale. Separata da poco dal marito, non ha più una casa: vaga tra capsule hotel, internet cafè aperti fino a tardi e super sento, i bagni pubblici a pagamento. Il lavoro non va meglio: all'eccentrica libreria Village Vanguard di Tôkyô, di cui è direttrice, le vendite languono. Disillusa e disamorata, Nanako si rende conto di quanto la sua vita sia diventata angusta, senza rapporti personali al di là dei colleghi e senza prospettive. C'è solo una passione che le permette di andare avanti: quella per i libri. Finché un giorno, d'impulso, Nanako si iscrive a un sito di incontri "veloci", in cui le persone hanno trenta minuti per vedersi, parlarsi ed entrare in sintonia. Spesso per trovare un partner, ma anche solamente per stabilire un contatto con un altro essere umano nella grande metropoli. Per distinguersi tra tanti profili, Nanako si presenta come libraia che può raccomandarti "il libro che cambierà la tua vita" e i primi match non si fanno attendere. Inizia così un anno di incontri con un'eclettica gamma di sconosciuti: per molti i libri sono solo un pretesto, altri invece si affidano con entusiasmo ai consigli di Nanako. C'è chi scopre per la prima volta la meraviglia di immergersi tra le pagine, chi addirittura sfodera un romanzo erotico dal cassetto, chi sta cercando un'autentica amicizia su cui poter contare. Tra momenti di disincanto e slanci di entusiasmo, Nanako si accorge che in lei si stanno risvegliando sogni dimenticati da tempo: c'è una persona che, più di chiunque, vuole incontrare, e una libreria che rappresenta tutto ciò che ha sempre desiderato... She joins a dating site called PerfectStrangers after separating from her husband where she meets strangers for a half an hour chat and afterwards recommends them a book. A short memoir, that goes down like a novel, of an eventful year in the author's life. A year of personal crisis and self-discovery, at the end of which she turns her life around for the better. At the heart of it, this is probably very profound if you sit and think about the reading experience, but on the surface it is such a seamlessly light read, that it balances the two with grace. I loved the experience of reading THE BOOKSHOP WOMAN, and the way it interwove a woman's story that is so
I am not quite sure what the mission and the purpose of this book is. As a story it is rather boring. Not very intriguing, exciting or interesting at all. And as a memoir it lacked depth.
