Dalla leggerezza di brevi episodi come "II tuffetto" e "Splendore e decadenza delle ciambelle a cono", condotti sul filo della comicità e dell'assurdo, passiamo alla nostalgica, eppure lucida rievocazione di ricordi autobiografici nel racconto "II folclore dei nostri tempi" e in quello che dà titolo al volume, "I salici ciechi e la donna addormentata", entrambi basati sull'esperienza giovanile dei mitici anni Sessanta. L'angoscia di scoprire sotto l'apparente trasporto verso qualcuno un senso di repulsione ispira "Granchi", mentre "I gatti antropofagi" porta alla luce l'angoscia dell'uomo che per scelta ha dato alla sua vita una svolta irreversibile, rinunciando a tutto ciò che aveva creduto di amare. Altrove ("Lo specchio", "Storia di una zia povera", "Nausea 1979", "L'uomo di ghiaccio"), troviamo l'irruzione del fantastico nella vita quotidiana, mentre ne "II settimo uomo" il tema dell'errore di gioventù che condiziona, e rovina, la vita intera di una persona, è introdotto da una di quelle visioni folgoranti con cui lo scrittore sa rappresentare l'orrore di una tragedia.
