Nel 1325 Ibn Battuta, partito da Tangeri 28 anni prima, torna definitivamente in Marocco dopo ventotto anni di viaggi e centoventimila chilometri percorsi con tutti i mezzi di trasporto allora in uso, dal cavallo al dromedario, dal carro ai più svariati tipi di imbarcazione. Secondo un odierno atlante geografico, ha attraversato l'equivalente di quarantaquattro stati moderni dall'Africa a tutto il Medio Oriente, dalla pianura del Volga alle isole Maldive, dall'India alla Cina, incontrando migliaia di persone e prendendo nota dei loro usi e costumi. Tre anni dopo il suo ritorno, un giovane letterato di origine andalusa, Ibn Juzayy, inizia per ordine del sultano ad annotare i ricordi di Ibn Battuta e le sue osservazioni di viaggio, scrivendo cosi uno dei libri più famosi della letteratura araba medievale.
