Il fascino personale di Mussolini ha costituito un fattore di consenso del regime fascista. Ma che cosa è successo dopo il 1945? Secondo l'autore il carisma del duce non è venuto meno con la sua morte. Il saggio prende le mosse dal Ventennio, studiando l'immaginario della morte del dittatore all'apogeo della sua vita. Vengono quindi ripercorse le avventure della salma dopo la fucilazione: l'oltraggio collettivo di piazzale Loreto; il trafugamento da parte neofascista; il lungo periodo di occultamento in nome della ragion di Stato; la controversa tumulazione a Predappio. Nell'Italia del dopoguerra, le vicende del "cadavere senza pace" hanno alimentato un movimento di pietà: compatire Mussolini era un modo di compatire e perdonare se stessi.

Some sections of this book were fascinating, other parts... not so much. It wasn't a very long book, but took me forever to finish (or get to the end where it got very interesting again). Plot is interesting. Writing is dry af. Maybe I wasn't in the right headspace for this but it took me two weeks to read and I had to drag my eyes to the pages continuously. I read the book in the German translation, which is not among the editions listed on Goodreads. It was published by “Eichborn Verlag” as part of the series “Die andere Bibliothek” (“The Other Library”), which is, in most cases, already an indicator for a quality book.
