È il fantastico il carattere dominante di questi tredici racconti, cui se ne aggiungono altri quattro in appendice mai radunati in un volume, in cui si concentrano i temi e i simboli che a Borges sembrano connaturati. In "L'altro", Borges settantenne, seduto su una panchina a Cambridge nel 1969, discorre con se stesso ventenne, seduto su quella stessa panchina a Ginevra nel 1918; nel "Libro di sabbia", il narratore acquista un libro senza principio né fine, composto da un numero infinito di pagine numerate arbitrariamente. Questi racconti rappresentano un ritorno alle atmosfere lucidamente visionarie degli scritti degli anni Quaranta. Ma diversa è la scrittura. Lo stile piano, quasi orale, si congiunge con una trama impossibile.

"The Congress," however, is a tale of the microcosm as powerful and effective as "The Aleph," and "The Book of Sand" is also one of Borge's finest stories.
