Isola di St Thomas, 1807. Rachel Pomié sogna di sgusciare via dalla sua esistenza e di fuggire a Parigi, una città di cui sa tutto, il suo sogno, però, di aggirarsi per le strade della capitale francese, vestita magari come una delle ragazze sbirciate di nascosto sul Journal des dames et des modes della madre, svanisce miseramente il giorno in cui finisce in sposa all'anziano commerciante Isaac Petit. La vita coniugale con monsieur Petit, un vedovo di trent'anni più vecchio di lei, si rivela piena di sacrifici, lutti e delusioni. Una mattina, appena arrivato da Parigi, compare al suo cospetto il nipote di Petit, Frédéric Pizzarro, un bel giovane coi capelli scuri, il portamento elegante e un francese parigino così nitido da sembrare un altro idioma rispetto al francese creolo dell'isola. Rachel, che ha la lingua più tagliente di tutta St Thomas, non riesce a spiccicare parola, quasi consapevole della fatalità di quell'incontro. Frédéric Pizzarro sarà, infatti, l'uomo della sua vita, e dal loro amore nascerà Camille, un ragazzino curioso e vivace che andrà a Parigi, si diplomerà all'École des Beaux-Arts, stringerà amicizia con Paul Cézanne e diventerà Camille Pissarro, uno dei più grandi pittori dell'Ottocento.
