I due, perseguitati da una Fortuna bizzarra e fantasiosa, rimangono divisi per quasi tutto lo svolgersi del libro, e affrontano peripezie tipiche del genere romanzesco: morti apparenti, guerre, naufragi, esecuzioni capitali mancate, mutamenti di identità e svelamenti inattesi. Tante avventure collocate in una geografia vastissima e mutevole, si chiudono con il ricongiungimento degli amanti.
