Il Gesù Cristo di Saramago, da alcuni cristiani ortodossi ritenuto blasfemo, è un carattere fortemente spirituale, ma in tutto e per tutto umano, che incarna i dubbi e le sofferenze propri della condizione universale di uomo. Il figlio di Dio, dalla nascita a Betlemme alla morte sul Golgota, affronta le medesime esperienze descritte nel Vangelo, qui però narrate secondo una prospettiva terrena, con spirito critico e senso logico. In questa storia non c'è fede nei miracoli, bensì coscienza di trovarsi in balìa della volontà di potenza di un Dio padre distante e indifferente al dolore che provoca. La serie di disgrazie, stragi e morti che costellano l'esistenza di Gesù, fino al non cercato e non accettato compimento del destino di vittima sacrificale, diventa così un'occasione per riflettere sulla contrapposizione tra bene e male, sulla problematicità di fare il giusto tramite l'ingiusto, sull'imperscrutabilità del senso della vita umana e sulla sconcertante ambiguità della natura divina.
