Monumento supremo del classicismo di primo Ottocento, l'Iliade montiana riuscì nell'ardua impresa di mettere d'accordo, unendoli in un consenso senza riserve, classicisti e romantici. Come scrisse infatti Madame de Staël nel "manifesto" del Romanticismo italiano, "l'Europa certamente non ha una traduzione omerica, di bellezza ed efficacia tanto prossima all'originale, come quella del Monti [...]. Niuno vorrà in Italia por lo innanzi tradurre la Iliade, poiché Omero non si potrà spogliare dell'abbigliamento onde il Monti lo rivestì". Sull'unicità e grandezza della traduzione montiana si sofferma anche l'introduzione di Michele Mari. Sottolineata soprattutto l'eccezionale unità di tono del poema, il curatore analizza i passaggi che, in un interminabile labor limae, portarono Monti alla stesura della quarta e definitiva versione, quella del 1825 qui presentata, e fornisce un ricco apparato di commento delle più significative varianti rispetto alle precedenti edizioni.
