E tocca le nostre. Questa versione dell'Iliade si apre con Achille, fuori di sé dal dolore per la morte dell'amico Patroclo. Dalle mura di Troia Priamo lo osserva perpetrare lo strazio estremo del cadavere del figlio Ettore, trascinato inerme dietro il cocchio, nella polvere. Ma, pensa il padre affranto, deve esistere un modo per farsi restituire il suo corpo. Un modo grazie al quale le parole di un dialogo possano prevalere sulla furia sorda dell'eroe guerriero, per superare le regole ferree e immutabili della tradizione e per forzare la mano del fato. E allora Priamo, spogliatosi delle insegne regali e indossata una semplice tunica, sale su un carro tirato da muli e guidato da un vecchio come lui, e si avvia umile, ma fermamente deciso, verso l'accampamento greco. Non per incontrare il feroce nemico, l'assassino del suo stesso sangue, ma un altro giovane uomo. Che potrebbe essere suo figlio. Un guerriero che è anche padre e al cui senso paterno Priamo si appella. Ricordandogli che siamo tutti esseri umani e quindi mortali, una condizione che ci accomuna non solo nel dolore, ma soprattutto nella compassione.
