Hugh Conway ha avuto modo di vedere il peggio dell’umanità dalle trincee della Prima guerra mondiale. Adesso, a oltre dieci anni di distanza, è un diplomatico inglese di stanza in Afghanistan e di nuovo si trova in mezzo a una guerra civile, che lo costringe ad abbandonare il paese a bordo di un aereo insieme a un suo sottoposto, a una missionaria e a un uomo d’affari americano. Ma il velivolo viene dirottato e si schianta al suolo in mezzo ai picchi himalayani, dove Conway e gli altri vengono trovati da una misteriosa guida che li conduce nella valle sconosciuta di Shangri-La, una sorta di paradiso terrestre dove gli abitanti vivono da secoli in pace e armonia e dove i superstiti vengono accolti con ospitalità e amicizia. Ma quando il capo della comunità si ammala, Conway si troverà di fronte a una scelta difficilissima che rimpiangerà tutta la vita.
Proprio grazie a Orizzonte perduto il mito di Shangri-La, inteso come eden immaginario e rivoluzionario, si diffonderà influenzando tanta parte della letteratura, musica e cinema del Novecento (Frank Capra nel 1937 ne trasse un celebre film). E l’avventura epica narrata nel romanzo continuerà a essere la più affascinante e longeva utopia della letteratura, che a oltre ottant’anni dall’uscita ammalia ancora i lettori di tutto il mondo, rendendo questo un libro di culto.
