Finalmente libero dalle minacce del passato, Michael Bennett può tornare nella sua città: New York. Grazie a lui, infatti, è stata smantellata la rete criminale guidata da Perrine, che aveva costretto Bennett ad allontanarsi dalla città e ad accettare la tutela di un programma di protezione testimoni. Di nuovo nella sua dimensione, Michael si dà da fare collaborando con una nuova unità, ma riceve quasi subito una chiamata allarmante: un tale sostiene di aver visto uomini in abiti costosi compiere una sorta di strano rituale all’interno di un edificio fatiscente. La descrizione dell’uomo, tuttavia, non contiene riferimenti chiari a infrazioni della legge e soprattutto non è sostanziata da prove. Così, in un primo momento, Bennett ignora la telefonata... ma ben presto, in seguito a una scoperta agghiacciante, verrà fatalmente attirato nei meandri di un mondo criminale oscuro e spietato. Un solo passo falso potrebbe significare la sua fine.

Ugh!!! First the book starts off really slow and then it ends too abruptly. I feel like the ending was rushed and wasn't finished. Once again I return to my analogy that James Patterson books are like junk food -- they taste good, it's hard to stop once you've started, and there's virtually no nutritional value. 3.5* Mike B. is back in NYC. The plot of the underground cannibals is weirdly entertaining to read (seriously that couple who Bennett and Brooklyn sit down next beside only to have to the worlds, “does it really taste like chicken?”). Narcolepsy might explain how this book ended. I think James Patterson just fell asleep and quickly woke up and said "I'm done. Let me just quickly finish this up". This had SO much potential!
