Francia, 1897. Albert Chanel, rimasto vedovo e con un lavoro precario, affida le sue tre figlie, Julia-Berthe, Gabrielle e Antoinette, alle suore dell’orfanotrofio di Aubazine. Educate per diventare perfette donne di casa, Gabrielle e Antoinette mostrano da subito una particolare attitudine per il cucito. In convento sono costrette a indossare divise dal taglio severo, ma di sera, sfogliando di nascosto romanzi e riviste di moda, sognano una vita diversa, fatta di abiti eleganti e affascinanti gentilhommes della haute societé…
Così, a diciotto anni Coco e Ninette lasciano il convento e lottano, unite e determinate, per dimostrarsi degne di quella società in cui non si sono mai sentite accettate. Per la prima volta, fanno ingresso nei Café chantant di Moulins, nelle sale da concerto di Vichy, sino ad approdare a Parigi dove, tra speranze e delusioni, l’apertura di un piccolo negozio di cappelli, in rue Cambon, segna per loro la grande svolta. È l’inizio di un’attività commerciale di successo che si espanderà nelle località più esclusive di Francia.
Ma lo scoppio della Prima guerra mondiale cambierà per sempre le loro vite: sarà allora che le due sorelle dovranno fare ricorso a tutto il loro coraggio e conquistarsi il loro posto nel mondo, anche a costo di separarsi l’una dall’altra.
