Sinossi
È un rovente pomeriggio d'agosto quello in cui Roya ha appuntamento in una piazza di Teheran con Bahman. Si sono conosciuti in una libreria, e lei si è subito innamorata di quel ragazzo appassionato di poesia che vuole cambiare il mondo. Vogliono sposarsi proprio quel giorno, di nascosto dalla famiglia di lui, ostile alla loro unione. Ma quello è anche il giorno in cui Roya scopre quanto male può fare la Storia quando ha piani diversi dai tuoi. Passano le ore, e Bahman in quella piazza non arriva. La ragazza si trova invece nel pieno di una sommossa violenta. Un colpo di Stato, scoprirà poi. In preda al panico, vede edifici in fiamme e uomini colpiti a morte sotto i suoi occhi, mentre lei riesce per un soffio a mettersi in salvo. Non sa perché il ragazzo non si è presentato, se ha cambiato idea, se è stato imprigionato o addirittura ucciso a causa delle sue opinioni. Quello che sa è che senza di lui la sua vita si prospetta come una sequela infinita di giorni vuoti. Tanti anni dopo, in America, dove il padre l'ha mandata per metterla al sicuro e dove si è rifatta una vita, un incidente del destino fa riemergere con forza le domande che ha dovuto soffocare nel profondo della sua anima: Perché sei sparito? Dove sei andato? Come hai potuto dimenticarmi? Quel che emergerà è una verità sconvolgente che la farà vacillare e la metterà di fronte alla caparbia forza dell'amore.
