Due persone si incontrano a pranzo in un ristorante di Manhattan. Lei è un'attrice affermata, impegnata nelle prove di un nuovo spettacolo. Il romanzo si apre nella seconda parte in una realtà alternativa: Xavier diventa il figlio ritrovato, che torna a vivere nella casa di famiglia, alterando certi equilibri, diventando fonte di continue sorprese.
Katie Kitamura mette in scena un romanzo superbo, un raffinato dramma psicologico e familiare, capace di indagare le identità che costruiamo e i ruoli che recitiamo nella vita quotidiana. Ma chi è questa donna? E chi è questo ragazzo per lei? Da queste domande originano due diverse narrazioni, capaci di riscrivere il modo in cui intendiamo i ruoli che impersoniamo ogni giorno – partner, genitore, creatore, musa – e le verità che ogni rappresentazione maschera, specialmente agli occhi di coloro che pensano di conoscerci davvero.
