Darius Kellner ha sedici anni, vive a Portland ed è mezzo persiano da parte di madre, ma sa più il klingon di Star Trek che il farsi, e conosce meglio le usanze degli Hobbit che quelle persiane. Ora, il suo primo viaggio in Iran sta per rivoluzionargli la vita. Darius non è esattamente quello che si dice un ragazzo popolare a scuola: farsi accettare per quello che è non è mai stato semplice ed è convinto che in Iran sarà lo stesso. Ma quando abbraccia per la prima volta la nonna e incontra Sohrab, il ragazzo della porta accanto, tutto cambia. The writing in this one was excellent! The author did a fantastic job at depicting the trials of depression. I remember the descriptions of food standing out to me in particular. (lol) The father - son relationship was super fascinating to me and I loved exploring how complex it was.
Re-read 8/11/20: I loved this book even more the second time around and am actually raising my rating from a 4 to a 5. This book is incredible and if you haven't read it yet YOU ABSOLUTELY NEED TO. I am so glad that I have an arc of Darius the Great Deserves Better so that I can dive in IMMEDIAT

3.5 stars A solid YA novel I would recommend to fans of Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda . Darius the Great Is Not Okay did not blow me away, but I appreciated several parts of it, in particular its emphasis on Persian/Iranian culture, its careful portrayal of depression, and its focus on friends
