Il dottor Aribert Heim prestò servizio nell'ambulatorio del campo di concentramento di Mauthausen soltanto per pochi mesi nel 1941, ma riuscì comunque a conquistarsi la fama di "volonteroso carnefice", tanto da meritare l'appellativo di "dottor Morte". Molti superstiti del lager hanno testimoniato che praticava l'eutanasia iniettando benzina nel cuore dei pazienti, operava persone assolutamente sane e, a detta di alcuni, amava tenere sulla scrivania il cranio di prigionieri con una bella dentatura. Eppure, nel caos dell'immediato dopoguerra, Heim riuscì a passare fra le maglie della denazificazione e a costruirsi l'immagine di stimato ginecologo e buon padre di famiglia nella città termale di Baden-Baden, dove conduceva un'esistenza agiata e tranquilla. La sua storia sarebbe potuta finire qui, se non fosse stato per un piccolo gruppo di tedeschi incapaci di rassegnarsi all'idea che i criminali di guerra non pagassero per le loro colpe. Uno di questi fu Alfred Aedtner, un giovane poliziotto che, entrato quasi per caso nell'ufficio per l'accertamento dei crimini nazisti, avrebbe fatto della caccia a Heim la propria ragione di vita. Quando nel 1962 il medico, informato che le autorità stavano per arrestarlo, si dileguò all'improvviso, la sua cattura divenne per Aedtner una vera e propria ossessione, che lo spinse a condurre le proprie indagini in tutta Europa e persino in Sudamerica, anche in collaborazione con Simon Wiesenthal, il leggendario cacciatore di nazisti...
