Negli ultimi tre decenni infatti la Chiesa cattolica ha affossato gli impulsi promettenti del Concilio Vaticano II e ha abbracciato di nuovo una visione retrograda della società e del proprio ruolo: per esempio, l'appello costante alla tradizione non è un richiamo alla purezza delle origini, ma un tentativo di mantenere un papato autocratico e medievale che ha già irrigidito la struttura ecclesiastica e la dottrina morale. Dalla Controriforma alla condanna della scienza, dalla negazione dell'evoluzionismo alla visione ristretta della sessualità, Roma ha scelto di rimanere cieca e sorda di fronte ai problemi dei fedeli, perdendo la presa sulla realtà. Né ha saputo riconoscere le questioni che tormentano i suoi ministri, prima fra tutte l'obbligo del celibato, una delle cause del calo di vocazioni che condiziona negativamente la cura pastorale. La dura analisi di Küng ripercorre la storia e gli errori del Vaticano, ne diagnostica con chiarezza i mali e propone le uniche cure possibili per risanarlo e riportarlo, presente e vivo, in mezzo alla gente: lasciarsi alle spalle i vecchi pregiudizi, condannare (non solo a parole) gli sbagli del passato, abolire le gerarchie a favore di una struttura democratica, e instaurare un dialogo aperto con i credenti e le altre confessioni.

This is a must read for anyone who wants to modernize the church. It is also a must read for anyone who is part of or connected to the workings/leadership of the church. While I may not have agreed with all Hans Kung wrote ( I did with 99%), I do appreciate the dialogue that must take place to move

Hans Kung wrote a thoughtful and interesting book. His interest in the Church along with his knowledge provides for great reading. I recommend this book to all who care for the Catholic Church.
