Ove ha 59 anni. Guida una Saab. La gente lo chiama "un vicino amaro come una medicina" e in effetti lui ce l'ha un po' con tutti nel quartiere: con chi parcheggia l'auto fuori dagli spazi appositi, con chi sbaglia a fare la differenziata, con la tizia che gira con i tacchi alti e un ridicolo cagnolino al guinzaglio, con il gatto spelacchiato che continua a fare la pipì davanti a casa sua. Ogni mattina alle 6.30 Ove si alza e, dopo aver controllato che i termosifoni non stiano sprecando calore, va a fare la sua ispezione poliziesca nel quartiere. Ogni giorno si assicura che le regole siano rispettate. Eppure qualcosa nella sua vita sembra sfuggire all'ordine, non trovare il posto giusto. Il senso del mondo finisce per perdersi in una caotica imprevedibilità. Così Ove decide di farla finita. Ha preparato tutto nei minimi dettagli: ha chiuso l'acqua e la luce, ha pagato le bollette, ha sistemato lo sgabello... Ma... Ma anche in Svezia accadono gli imprevisti che mandano a monte i piani. In questo caso è l'arrivo di una nuova famiglia di vicini che piomba accanto a Ove e subito fa esplodere tutta la sua vita regolata. Tra cassette della posta divelte in retromarce maldestre, bambine che suonano il campanello offrendo piatti di couscous appena fatti, ragazzini che inopportunamente decidono di affezionarsi a lui, Ove deve riconsiderare tutti i suoi progetti. E forse questa vita imperfetta, caotica, ingiusta potrebbe iniziare a sembrargli non così male...

This novel, set in Sweden, tells the story of Ove, who can best be described as a curmudgeon. The story takes place after the death of his wife, and shows how healing can occur with the unlikeliest of people, in the unlikeliest of ways.
