La battaglia di Maratona, una delle battaglie più famose della storia, fu combattuta e vinta nel settembre del 490 a.C. dagli ateniesi contro il potentissimo esercito persiano su una piana costiera a una quarantina di chilometri da Atene. L'episodio, riferito da Erodoto, è stato sempre un rompicapo per gli storici dell'antichità. Come è possibile che gli ateniesi uscissero vincitori da uno scontro così impari? Come è possibile, ad esempio, che essi andassero all'assalto dei persiani correndo, armati, per un chilometro e mezzo, come racconta Erodoto? Krentz ricostruisce pazientemente lo stato originario del luogo dello scontro, la dislocazione degli eserciti, gli armamenti (persino il loro peso), le tattiche, giungendo a quella che si può considerare la più documentata e dettagliata descrizione della battaglia che, ponendo fine all'invincibilità persiana, costituì un punto di svolta decisivo nella storia della Grecia e, alla lunga, dello stesso Occidente.

If you are interested in history especially about Marathon battle this is for you, though be prepared to read an academic and historian perspective. So if history is not your kind of thing, avoid it as will put you down to sleep
enjoyed the book lot of facts about equipment and men of both sides only probably I had with the book is that a bought for the kindle and illustrations did not show up but the maps did
