È il 1937 quando Lisette giunge a Roussillon, un villaggio della Provenza appollaiato in cima a una montagna. André, il marito, ha deciso di abbandonare la capitale e trasferirsi in quel borgo sperduto perché il nonno, Pascal, gli ha chiesto aiuto a causa della sua cagionevole salute. A Roussillon, però, i due non si imbattono affatto in un anziano malandato e in fin di vita, ma in un aitante ottantenne che un giorno mostra a Lisette e André la ragione vera del loro arrivo a Roussillon: sette dipinti appesi alle pareti, sette capolavori di Cézanne, Pissarro e altri grandi maestri. Un tesoro che il vecchio ha ricevuto dalle mani stesse degli artisti quando anni prima, «giovane, sprezzante e pieno di grandi idee», aveva pensato di improvvisarsi corniciaio a Parigi. Vreeland is definitely on my list of authors whose books I'm definitely going to want to get my hands on it as soon as I can whenever they come out.
