Attingendo a una mole sterminata di conoscenze, Bayly ripercorre il sorgere di uniformità globali nello Stato, nella religione, nelle arti, nei rapporti di genere, nelle ideologie politiche e nella vita economica nel corso del XIX secolo. Il quadro che si disegna è una "world history" che si sottrae a qualunque visione unidirezionale, che accetta di essere decentrata e segnata dalla discontinuità, dalle rotture non preannunciate e insieme dal permanere di antiche forme di dominio.
