Come tutti i bambini cresciuti nella Corea del Nord anche Hyeonseo Lee pensa, che il suo paese sia "il migliore del mondo". È una "brava comunista", studia le gesta leggendarie del Caro Leader Kim Il-sung, partecipa alle coreografie di massa organizzate dal Partito e crede che la Corea del Sud, l'acerrimo nemico, sia un paese poverissimo, pieno di senza-tetto, dove la gente muore per le strade e gli odiati yankee si divertono a prendere a calci bambini e disabili. Per lei, proveniente da una famiglia della classe media "leale" nei confronti del regime, le cose cambiano all'improvviso quando, nel 1994, la Corea del Nord viene sconvolta da una terribile carestia. È allora, nel vedere molti suoi connazionali morire di fame o sopravvivere a stento cibandosi di erba, insetti e corteccia d'albero, che Hyeonseo, appena diciassettenne, comincia a interrogarsi sulla reale natura del proprio paese e a dubitare delle verità confezionate dalla propaganda. Ed è allora che si accorge che al di là del confine, in Cina, poco lontano dalla sua casa di Hyesan, le luci non si spengono mai. E che forse, dall'altra parte del fiume ghiacciato, un'altra vita è possibile. Comincia così la storia di una rocambolesea fuga da una dittatura spietata e corrotta, una fuga che la porterà dapprima a vivere da illegale nella Cina del tumultuoso sviluppo economico, e in seguito a Seul, la capitale del Sud, dove riuscirà a condurre la sua famiglia dopo un avventuroso viaggio di oltre duemila chilometri attraverso il Sudest asiatico.

I feel like this book explains a lot about Koreans. I often say we are a small but mighty country, and that’s exactly what the author is. What a story! So much she and her family has had to endure…I hope they find it to be a happy one in the end.
