Nella cantina di casa di un insegnante di matematica, Cornelius Engelbrecht, un signore sobriamente vestito, dal carattere chiuso e dall'atteggiamento sfuggente, giace un quadro prezioso che ritrae una ragazza vestita di blu. In un momento d'abbandono e di inconsueta familiarità, Engelbrecht confida a un amico che il quadro, palesemente risalente al XVII secolo, è una delle opere "ignote" di Vermeer, il grande pittore olandese.
