Jessica Fletcher è a una grigliata da amici quando il padrone di casa, nonché marito della sua cara amica Barbara Wirth, per tutti Babs, rimane vittima di un attacco cardiaco. In un primo momento, Jessica tenta di tenere a bada il suo istinto da scrittrice di libri gialli, che la porta a vedere crimini a ogni angolo e qualcosa di losco in ogni morte improvvisa e inspiegabile. Ma più passano le ore, più si convince che non sia stata una fatalità e che in realtà si tratti di omicidio: al centro dei suoi sospetti, si trova un misterioso sito di appuntamenti online che il marito di Barbara ha frequentato durante un momento difficile del matrimonio e che potrebbe essere coinvolto in qualche modo in una truffa da milioni di dollari. Non appena un nuovo omicidio si aggiunge alla lista, Jessica si unisce quindi a un giovane e brillante hacker per seguire e avvalorare la sua pista.
