Madeleine Hanna era l'unica laureanda a non aver capito. Siamo, significativamente, all'inizio degli anni Ottanta, e mentre tutti gli altri attorno a lei leggono Roland Barthes e studiano lo strutturalismo ("la prima cosa che profumava di rivoluzione"), Madeleine rimane felicemente attaccata a Jane Austen, George Eliot e Henry James. Un po' troppo elegante per i gusti dei suoi amici bohémien, Madeleine è la studentessa perfetta e avvenente la cui vita amorosa non è mai stata all'altezza delle proprie aspettative. Ma ora, all'ultimo anno di università, si è iscritta al corso di semiotica: visto che tutti ne parlano, sedotti e affascinati, vuole almeno capire di cosa si tratta. Non sa che da quel momento, indipendentemente dallo studio, per lei vita e letteratura non saranno più le stesse. Tutto cambia quando, imbattutasi nei "Frammenti di un discorso amoroso" ed essendone rimasta folgorata, decide di cedere al fascino di Léonard Bankhead, un giovane dallo strano carisma che soffre di profonde crisi depressive, fino a convincersi di esserne davvero innamorata. Ma siccome la vita spesso sembra giocare con quei romanzi che Madeleine ha tanto amato, ricompare anche all'improvviso Mitchell Grammaticus, un vecchio amico che ha preferito dedicarsi allo studio delle religioni, ossessionato dall'idea che Madeleine è la donna della sua vita. Nel corso di un anno, da quando si laureano e muovono i primi passi nel mondo, si vedranno costretti a rimettere in discussione tutto quello che hanno imparato...

Masterful on many levels. At first I wasn't drawn to any of the three characters in the love triangle - Madeleine, Leonard, and Mitchell. Each seemed deeply flawed, and they are. I'm convinced this is what happens if you combine a Whit Stillman script, Franny and Zooey, and a whole lot of beige.
